2010 Census

The 2010 census figures for New York State were delivered at 2 p.m. today. Gossips has so far been unable to confirm this, but word has it that the population of the City of Hudson has declined by 800--a more than 10 percent decrease--in the first decade of the 21st century. There will be more information tomorrow.

  2. Any idea of when the figures will be generally i.e., publicly) available?

This does not bode well for Columbia County as a whole.

  3. The 2009 estimate for Hudson population was -9% from 2000 -- so that if it's -10% in 2010, it's pretty much a straight-line continuation of the downward trend.

  4. Jock--In answer to your earlier question, the census figures for New York should be on the US Census website by this afternoon (Friday): http://factfinder2.census.gov. At that point, we'll be able to see more than just numbers--for example, education, median income, that sort of thing--and undertand better what seems to be a very dramatic loss of population in a city that seems anything but abandoned and dying.

  5. The Daily Freeman reported today on the figures and Roy Brown was on WGXC this afternoon reporting Columbia County figures. Columbia County gained two people from 2000-2010?

  6. Carole I looked at the US Census site including the URL you gave but boy, was I stumped about how to find this piping hot data. Talk about user-unfriendly.

If you have another link, I'd be very grateful if you can share it.

We know that upstate New York is becoming depopulated and Hudson and Columbia County are part of the downdraft. It is very bad news and everyone connected with policy at every level, from villages on up, needs to be mindful of the sobering implications of shrinking population.

Planning and thinking need to be smart and forward-looking -- not necessarily the first adjectives that spring to mind when contemplating Columbia County governance.

  7. The NY Daily News Blog posted town-by-town Census information that was pulled together by NYPIRG. Here is the link:
