Politics in the Empire State

Something that doesn't happen very often is happening right now in New York: the incumbent governor, Andrew Cuomo, and his choice for lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, are being challenged for the Democratic endorsement by Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu. The primary election that will decide who will be the Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor takes place on Tuesday, September 9.

These two races are the only races in the primary on September 9, so only registered Democrats can vote that day. If you are not currently registered to vote, the deadline for registering, in order to vote in the primary, is this Friday, August 15. If you need to change your address, the deadline for doing that is Wednesday, August 20. You can complete the registration form online here, but it cannot be submitted electronically. You must print it out, sign it, and deliver it to the Board of Elections, 401 State Street. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
