A Cautionary Tale

There was a fire today at 451 East Allen Street. The most visible damage caused by the fire was to the roof.

The fire was started, according to people in the neighborhood, by a heat gun being used to remove paint.

Ten or so years ago, the house at 453 East Allen Street, right next door to this one, was seriously damaged by fire when sun coming through a window caused rags that had been used in refinishing a floor to spontaneously combust. Another house on the street was the victim of a serious fire when a worker installing a wood shake roof tossed away a cigarette, which lodged in the shakes.

Now that spring is finally here, restoration and renovation work is going on at many houses in Hudson. The fire on East Allen Street today is a reminder that caution must be the watchword whenever such projects are undertaken.
