Posting Comments on Gossips

A few years ago, Gossips experimented with allowing readers to opt for "Anonymous" when asked to select a profile. The results were not happy. Civil discourse and meaningful exchange of ideas were abandoned as one "Anonymous" engaged in verbal sparring with another "Anonymous." After a few days, the experiment was abandoned, and Gossips' commenting policy went back to requiring all commenters to register--that is, to have an online profile.

In recent weeks, a few regular readers have been flummoxed by the registration requirement and have appealed to me for assistance. Their frustration has persuaded me to relax the commenting requirements. It is now possible, when asked to select a profile, to click on "Anonymous." However, if you do, must sign your comment with your actual name. If you don't, your comment will not be published. It seems a reasonable compromise. We'll see how it works out.
