Reviving a Hudson Tradition

Bed races are the stuff of legend in Hudson. When the tradition began or how long it lasted is not known--at least not by Gossips--but bed races are fondly remembered by many. Recently, Paul Abitabile posted more than a dozen pictures on Facebook of the 1984 bed races. These three were among them.

At the beginning of the new millennium, the bed races were revived a few times. The following pictures of the bed races from that era were provided by Lisa Durfee. The first picture shows an entry, designed and created by Nancy Wiley, that competed in the 2001 bed races. The bed in the foreground of the second picture, from the 2003 race, was the creation of Lisa Durfee.

There are plans afoot to bring back the bed races again this year. Rich Volo, a.k.a. Trixie Starr, has organized an initial planning meeting to take place on Wednesday, January 13, at 6 p.m., at the Chamber of Commerce, 1 North Front Street. Anyone interested in bringing back the bed races is invited to attend, with their ideas and a willingness to get things done. There will be cookies from Trixie's Oven.
