A Significant Year for History and Preservation

During this year--2016--three significant anniversaries are taking place. It is the centennial of the Columbia County Historical Society. It is the 50th anniversary of the saving of Olana. It is the 20th anniversary of the founding of Historic Hudson.

Related to the first anniversary, marking a hundred years since the founding of the Columbia County Historical Society, Gossips discovered this letter to the editor, which appeared in the Columbia Republican on October 29, 1907, arguing the need for a historical society in Columbia County.

  1. 2016 is also the 300th Anniversary of the founding of the Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack. To honor of this anniversary, the Church has planned a number of events for 2016 including a concert by Hope College Chapel Choir from Holland, Michigan in March and the official anniversary celebration service in May. In addition, Dutch tulips (planted to outline the numeral "300") and daffodils have been planted on the hillside of the church grounds facing Route 9H. Also, to recognize the 300th Anniversary and to honor the town's Dutch heritage, the Claverack community planted more than 20,000 daffodils in the village last fall and they are just beginning to emerge from the ground.
