The Great War: April 7, 1917

In 1917, April 7 was the Saturday before Easter. The United States had declared war on Germany the previous day, on Good Friday. On April 7, 1917, the front page of the Hudson Evening Register had a headline reporting that Brazil and Cuba were expected to declare war on Germany and another announcing that a German sea raider had been "officially reported off Nantucket" that very morning. Also on the front page, these words of advice appeared at the top of the page, in the center, spanning two columns: 


At the lower right of the page, also taking up two columns, was this proclamation from the mayor of Hudson, Charles S. Harvey:
