In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World

Hudson may not exactly be what Henry David Thoreau was thinking of when he wrote this line, but, for a city, we have our share of wildness. Deer sightings are common. Skunks and woodchucks live among us. Bears have visited on occasion, and coyotes have been seen and heard. A few days ago someone posted a video on Facebook of an opossum making its nocturnal way from shop to shop along Warren Street. And this morning, Nick Zachos sent me this photograph of a snapping turtle nestled beside the Second Street stairs.
