House Out of the Woods

There are a few houses around town that evoke concern because they are vacant and seemingly neglected. One of them is 34 South Front Street.

The house was acquired by new owners in August 2018, and last Friday, plans for its restoration were presented to the Historic Preservation Commission. The house is getting a new roof and new windows, and the door at the left is to be replaced with a wider door. The four members of the HPC present at Friday's meeting--John Schobel, Miranda Barry, Paul Barrett, and Phillip Schwartz--granted a certificate of appropriateness with two conditions: that specs for the new windows and the new doors at the rear of the building (visible from Partition Street) be submitted for review by the commission.

  1. The large eight over eight windows on the first floor speak of an early building lurking underneath all the changes.
