Observed at Tonight's Planning Board Meeting

A week or so ago, Peter Spear, who was then still a candidate for mayor of Hudson, drew a comparison between the mayoral race in Hudson and the mayoral race in New York City: "The Spooky Similarities Between the Hudson & NYC Mayoral Race." Being compared to Eric Adams got our mayor's knickers in a twist, but Lloyd Koedding, the Republican candidate for mayor, seems to be embracing his comparison with Curtis Sliwa. Koedding showed up at the Planning Board meeting tonight wearing a red beret similar to the one worn regularly by Sliwa, the founder of the 1970s volunteer crime watch group the Guardian Angels, for whom red berets were part of the uniform.

  1. Lloyd’s humor is appreciated at times like these.

Also, while we’re at it, I’ve wondered if Peter’s reference to “spooky similarities” was inspired by Einstein’s “spooky action at a distance” when describing quantum entanglement?

  2. Lloyd told me at last Saturday's farmers market something about a red beret coming out soon which I had immediately filed away in my "not essential" compartment of my memory.

Thus, I had forgotten about it when I ran into him at the PB Colarusso workshop tonight. I told him he looks like a poisonous mushroom now.

  3. The more publicity this clown gets, the more the clownshow known as Hudson politics becomes normalized. He's a phony. Ignore him so that Kamal Johnson has less of a chance of remaining in City Hall.
By the way, has anyone else noticed Kamal's political lawn sign along the sidewalk in front of the Hudson Police Department? Will one (or more) be appearing in front of City Hall soon enough? Yesterday I also saw one strategically placed at a busy intersection in Greenport.

    1. My interpretation of voter dynamics in Hudson is that Lloyd hurts Kamal’s chances. Being on the Republican line alone will draw a small, but not insignificant number of votes. Hudson’s Republicans skew more “local” than transplant and if only given the choice between two progressives, they would vote for a “local” over a NYC transplant.

If anything, Peter remaining in the election would ultimately help Kamal’s chances. Joe and Peter supporters probably share a bigger tent: progressive yet “pragmatic,” urbanism, optimism over grievance, and ones who are more “serious” and pay attention to the mundane issues in Hudson, and are more concerned with the material improvement of the city rather than aesthetics and identity. Peter knew this and he withdrew because he knows this election is more important than one person.

But yes, I’ve noticed a lot a Kamal signs all over Greenport. Which makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Ironic since Kamal’s opening salvo during the debate was criticizing Joe for sending some of his mailers to Greenport addresses, which was likely a database sorting error with the board of elections list and the unfortunate and confusing comprehensiveness of the 12534 zip code.

    2. Interestingly, Union Jack, Lloyd Koedding will appear on two lines on the ballot in November: on the Republican line and on his own "Harmony Party" line.

    3. True, Carole. So he will draw votes from Republicans and followers of the "Celestine Prophecy.” πŸ›ΈπŸ‘½πŸ§™πŸ»‍♂️
