At last night's Common Council meeting, Council president Tom DePietro suggested to Lloyd Koedding that Mayor Kamal Johnson might be able to grant him the exemption he sought from Chapter 289 of the city code, which makes it illegal for someone to be living in a vehicle parked in the municipal parking lot behind City Hall.
Today, Koedding followed up on that suggestion, sending this request to Johnson (and also to Gossips):
It will be interesting to see how Johnson responds to this request from someone challenging him for his job as mayor . . . if he responds at all.

The mayor can grant exemptions to the law?! On what planet is that? Planet Tom?
ReplyDeleteIn NYS, unlike on Planet Tom, the legislative intent cannot be circumvented by the chief executive officer of the municipality. In other words, if the law says "x," "x" it is, regardless of the mayor's wishes. We call that "separation of powers" -- a concept unfamiliar to the fabulists on Planet Tom.
How many clowns are there in this clown show? There are so many I'm losing track. Who is the head clown?
ReplyDeleteHe can't do it formerly but what a mayor can do is ask the HPD to deprioritize certain things.
ReplyDeleteThere's precedent for that: Our mayor used to deprioritize collecting delinquent property taxes...
Perfectly said!
DeleteThey’re already doing that — it’s no secret he’s been living there.
DeleteAt this point, since Lloyd made the request, he can’t now be arrested for this. It would be like jailing your political opponent. No Kings, right Mayor Johnson?
