Parking Advisory

Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day is NOT one of the holidays on which alternate side of the street rules are suspended. Starting at midnight, cars should be parked on the odd side of the street.

  1. This city is as corrupt and unfriendly as they come. There are 11 or 12 federal holidays, including tomorrow, but the city long ago chose to only recognize 8 of them as worthy of taking a break from issuing overnight tickets. If you were to ask Police Chief Franklin why every federal holiday isn't ticket-free, she would respond, "because that's the way it's always been done." Oh wait, she's on maternity leave again. Can't ask her anything for the next two months at least.
Go to the city website and spend ten minutes trying to find the list of ticket-,free holidays. Chances are you won't be able to. Don't bother looking on the Parking Bureau's page or the HPD page or their fakebook page. It's information neither of those departments wants to readily share with residents, and they don't give a crap if you get another $15 ticket on a federal holiday. In fact, they'd prefer every resident with a car to wake up to one tomorrow on their windshield. The tickets are good for community relations and for business. The business of graft and disrespect.
I guarantee that the DPW street sweeper will not be out tonight (IT'S A HOLIDAY!!). Why would HPD care about that?

  2. Yet it was a holiday from street cleaning.

    1. Traditionally, the DPW has had a stronger union than the parking enforcement division. Now that the latter is part of the police union, you'd expect better treatment. Perhaps they're the Transit Cops of the HPD?

  3. Well before there is overnight street sweeping in the City of Ithaca -- which happens far less than here in Hudson -- the activity is indicated at the TOP of the main page of the city's website. Every resident knows this. Every resident, on any night of the week, can easily know what side of the street they are supposed to park their car on. Ithaca City Hall cares about its residents. There is coordination between departments to make sure all residents are treated with respect and dignity so that there is no hint of impropriety, shady bullshit or $15 "gotcha" traffic tickets on a federal holiday or on the 1st of the month following a 31st of the previous month. They INFORM taxpayers of the things they need to be informed of to create a livable, respectable city people can be proud of. They get it. Kamal Johnson does not get it and he never will.

Along with a mayor paid @ $30,000, Ithaca has a city manager who oversees daily operations and is paid over $150,000. The mayor's salary was cut in half a few years ago when the manager was brought on board.
