Ear to the Ground

It seems Hudson is soon to have another coffee roastery. Gossips has learned that Whistle Punk Coffee Roasters is planning to open at 317 Warren Street, the location for nearly two decades of Foley & Cox.

Whistle Punk already has three locations, all in the Hudson Valley: New Windsor, Beacon, and Cornwall. Hudson will be its fourth and northernmost establishment. (Hudson's Community Character Preservation Law [Chapter 325, Article XIV] prohibits businesses with four or more locations.)

Galvan acquired 317 Warren Street in 2005 and restored its facade, re-creating a period storefront. It is not known if the building is part of the gift to Bard College or not. The tax rolls for 2026 still list Galvan Initiatives Foundation as the owner of the property.

  1. Guess you can't have too many coffee shops. We must be the most caffeinated municipality per capita in the Hudson Valley.

    1. Funny how the one market nobody plans or centrally regulates is the one that works.

No special board approves a roastery.

There is no Coffee Justice Director with an office next to the Mayor's Office.

There is no Hudson Catskill Coffee Coalition.

Meanwhile housing, schools and healthcare get boards, studies, subsidies and years of review, and in Hudson we get $42,000 a pupil and ~$800,000 per HHA apartment, and a hospital that loses ~$1m per month.

The coffee at least shows up on time, and there are options at all price points and most times of day, with a cafe vibe for almost every preference.

Notice that the coffee shop owners and workers put in the time, compete in the open market, charge everyone the same price, risk their own capital and time, and evolve.

      No regulatory capture.

  2. Let's hope they buy the $1,250,000 tax-exempt 610 State from the county and roast their beans there.

  3. Unlike Foley and Cox, there's something affordable here if you limit a visit to once a month. Black coffee is complex and healthy too. So, I hear.

  4. Based on these laws, how is westerlind allowed to operate in Hudson? They have way more than four locations. By my count seven or eight?

    1. Obviously, Hudson's law does not force a business to leave if they establish additional locations after they open a store in Hudson. When Westerlind was getting ready to open its Hudson location, there were three other locations. What wasn't known was that, at the same time, they were also preparing to open in Kingston. The Kingston location opened a couple of months before the Hudson location. That situation caused the Common Council to revisit and revise the law so that something like this could not happen again. The whole story is told in these posts: https://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2022/07/preserving-community-character.html; https://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2022/07/now-what.html; https://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2023/02/hudson-and-formula-businesses.html; https://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2023/06/hudson-and-chain-stores.html

  5. We all need to be more civilly aware, show up to meeting and voice our concerns. Contact the mayor and the council and make sure we are all aware when another business tries to sneak through.

Unfortunately another business snuck through two years ago. The bodega that took over cascades spot and smells like cockroach and rat droppings. They have five locations in nyc, this is their sixth in the state. Info the owner was happy to share.

  6. Isn’t the law clearly written? The law reads 4 or more. Simple math they have 3 now, this will clearly be their fourth. Unless they want 2 locations in Hudson I don’t see a problem.
I don’t know maybe I’’m stupid- But I also love my coffee.

  7. Clic which operates as J'adore Gallery has 12 locations. All are tasty as a mayonnaise sandwich on white bread.

  8. Westerlind has 8 locations including Hudson..why not repeal the chain law altogether if it becomes more impotent over time and energize a new disneyfication of Warren street
More jobs for mascots and Snow White hemp apron shops..could be just the thing for a hollowed out landscape of same retail forever.
