It's been confirmed. There is a harmful algal bloom in Oakdale Lake, and the lake is closed for swimming and all water-contact recreation. People are also advised to keep dogs away from the water.
It's a pretty natural phenomenon. The NYS DEC (https://dec.ny.gov/environmental-protection/water/water-quality/harmful-algal-blooms) offers this explanation of why it happens:
HABs are likely triggered by a combination of water and environmental conditions such as:
excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen); lots of sunlight; low-water or low-flow conditions; calm water; and warm temperatures.
Depending on the weather and the characteristics of the lake, HABs may be short-lived (appearing and disappearing in hours) or long-lived (persisting for several weeks or more).
I hope we get some info about what caused the algae bloom.
