A video created by DOT showing the roundabout in use, with vehicles zipping in and out of the circle, can be viewed here.
The purpose of the project is twofold: to provide safety improvements to the intersection and to "provide a pedestrian facility in the project area to help provide connections to northern Columbia County, the Olana State Historic Site and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge to Catskill." The published project objectives are:
- Correct safety deficiencies using cost-effective accident reduction measures.
- Provide a pedestrian connection between the Rip Van Winkle bridge and Olana to reduce the need for pedestrians to cross high speed traffic highway lanes.
- Increase recreational parking.

love roundabouts but they must be large enough to accommodate traffic - small ones - like in valatie - are poor examples
ReplyDeleteThe big problem -- and the video only makes the problem seem worse -- is the speed of the vehicles. If I'm a pedestrian or bike-rider, I'd rather take my chances with what got now than negotiating the proposed pinball machine. They have slow the vehicles down, starting at least a quarter of a mile away from the roundabout if this going to work.
ReplyDeleteIf you see the design shown, those light colored sections crossing the red islands are sidewalks with crosswalks.
DeleteThus, if you are a pedestrian using those, the speed of the vehicles does not matter, since they have to stop for you!
Plus, the way that is designed, you are only crossing one lane at a time (with a space in between) which also makes it easier.
They "have to stop"? Oh yes, a "light colored section" will make the cars slow down. Oh Please! "The speed of the vehicles does not matter" -- Is this a joke?
Deletei predict MORE (but less tragic) accidents. american drivers hate roundabouts. Thou shall not slow me down.
