The Great War: June 11, 1918
During World War I, each group of men who left to be trained for the war in Europe—whether they were volunteers or draftees—had their picture taken on the steps of the Columbia County courthouse, and those pictures regularly appeared on the front page of the Columbia Republican. The picture below was on the front page of the Columbia Republican for May 14, 1918.
On June 11, 1918, the front page of the Columbia Republican included this item, which reported on the fate of some the men who had left Hudson bound for foreign places. A number of them, after they had reached Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina, had been disqualified for service because they failed to pass all the physical examinations they were subjected to by the army surgeons there.
