Decoration Day

The holiday we observe tomorrow, Memorial Day, was originally called Decoration Day. In 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, May 30 was designated as a day for strewing flowers on the graves of those who died in the War Between the States. Given the holiday's history, it was wonderfully appropriate that the Conservation Advisory Council chose this weekend to install the new plantings at the entrance to Cedar Park Cemetery.

On Saturday morning, Arone Dyer, who designed the new planting scheme, led a crew of her colleagues on the CAC--Joshua Cohen, Michael O'Hara, and Sam Semchenko--and Michael Santoro in putting the plants in the ground. The result is beautiful.
