More Kiosks Are Coming

Ever since the first six parking kiosks were installed at the entrances to municipal lots last summer, people have wondered when the other ten kiosks would appear. Wonder no more. The following announcement was received minutes ago from the mayor's office:
Installation of the remaining 10 parking kiosks will begin tomorrow morning. Extending from the 100 Block of Warren Street to the 700 Block, these kiosks will provide people parking in Hudson an additional option to pay for parking. A kiosk will also be placed on Columbia Street where on-street parking is in effect. The new kiosks will accept quarters and credit cards.
Kiosks will be installed at the following locations:
    • 136 Warren Street
    • 213 Warren Street
    • 425 Warren Street
    • 516 Warren Street
    • 539 Warren Street
    • 602 Warren Street
    • 701 Warren Street
    • 722 Warren Street
    • 735 Columbia Street
    • 751 Warren Street

  1. I never wanted more "options." All I want to do is put a quarter in the meter and be done parking. Another app in my life is the last thing I need.

  2. Kiosks, if you can find one, will take quarters. The transaction will take at least one minute, about 20 times longer than dropping a quarter in a meter. And if it's raining or pouring, add another minute or three of anxiety and time taken from your day. This new paid parking system was a huge mistake.

  3. Could they make all the kiosks the same price and zone whether for a parking lot or on the street. The confusion between the two different zones is ridiculous.

  4. The parking system works fine. Could it be better? Was the rollout bungled a little? Of course, but that was due to the fact we had a nonexistent former mayor and executive leadership, so the council had to basically toss it to the police to figure it out. Yes, the meters were quaint and part of the small town cosplay many in Hudson love, but they can’t keep fixing the archaic machines and, sit down for this, they need to raise the price beyond what a few quarters can cover. Call me crazy, but I’m one of the weirdos who believes that the city should take advantage of its destination draw and extract more revenue from nonresident visitors, rather than squeezing residents. I live here and mostly walk, but sometimes I drive to a business on Warren when time is tight or I’m feeling hungover, or maybe just lazy. I use the app like a person who knows how to do things. The people who complain about how complicated it is are just advertising that they are easily confused.

Here’s a funny anecdote: one weekend, as I was walking down Warren, I overheard a tourist couple talking about paying for parking. The woman says to the man, “how much was it?” “One dollar,” the man answers, chuckling to himself. “One dollar? Why do they even bother?” exclaims the woman, as they slowly saunter into the distance.
