This morning, at about the same time Gossips was sharing the news that Billy Blowers had decided not to run for mayor, Mark Allen was announcing on Instagram that a new candidate has entered the race: Lloyd A. Koedding.
I don’t think so. One can even be on the ballot on multiple party lines, Democrat & Republican, WFP, DSA, Conservative, or even your own made up party. One can even lose one party’s primary and still be on the general ballot under another line. National party affiliation is silly when it comes to local elections. The more we stay focused on the actual local issues, the better.
Yes, you must be a Democrat to run in the Democratic Primary in NYS, which doesn’t have open primaries or “fusion” voting. A (rare) exception to this is if someone obtains express authorization — a “Wilson Pakula” certificate — from the Dem Party to run on its line. That has not happened in this case. - Verity Smith (Chair, Hudson City Democratic Committee)
I mean that’s what the general is typically for, there’s pretty concrete reasons for party primary’s so a party member can choose their own candidate. I would be surprised if Lloyd is a dem but don’t really care either way, just curious
I should point out my “announcement” on Instagram about this candidate was not in any official capacity. As people familiar with my Instagram know, I post about interesting things that happen to me in Hudson (and memes and videos).
This morning, Lloyd approached me asking to sign his petition because he was running for mayor (the petition does say he is running for Mayor of Hudson NY, on the Democrat ticket). Knowing that he is a colorful local character, I posted about it. I knew little else. I did send the post to Carole as a “tip,” as I love her reporting. The timing of the Billy Blowers announcement was purely coincidental.
Someone on my Instagram (who I know has worked with voter registering in Hudson a long time) has already pointed out on my Instagram that Lloyd is a registered Republican, and this disqualifies him from running as a Democrat. And, this basically nullifies his petition. I am hardly an expert in these kinds of things so perhaps someone else can give a more specific explanation or answer.
And if true, someone should inform Lloyd.
As always, Mark

Do you have to be a democrat to run in the democratic primary? Serious question

Verity... why not give more residents Party Authorization to run on the line?
DeleteWhy not support more open competition? Aren't primaries supposed to be an opportunity for your VOTERS to decide... not party insiders.
I mean... are you trying to have the Wail and others make jokes about KamalA and another "hot swap" of candidates?

DeleteThe easiest thing for Lloyd to have done, as a registered Republican, is to collect signatures to run in the Republican primary.
DeleteGiven the likelihood that no one else would run, even with just a handful of votes in June, he'd be on the ballot for the general election.
Party insiders aren't stopping Lloyd from running in the Democratic primary. New York State election law prohibits this.
