Gossips has learned that at some time between 3:00 p.m. yesterday and 7:00 a.m. today, a large vessel struck the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse dock, tearing it loose from the lighthouse and destroying the stairs that led to the main deck of the building.
Update: Joe Kenneally of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society, who was Gossips' original source of the news about the destruction of the lighthouse dock and stairs, provided further information this afternoon: "Apparently it happened around 2:30 a.m. by a southbound tug." It is not clear if that is the definitive explanation.
After seeing the original Gossips post, Nick Pierro, First Assistant Chief of the Hudson Fire Department, shared this information: "Around 10:15 p.m., a large barge went down the river. It looked very wide and long. It was hard to tell as it was raining and dark. However, [the barge] appeared to stop near the lighthouse, back up, and do some crazy things that I thought were weird. The vessel then continued south and out of view."
I forwarded Pierro's report to Kenneally, but I have not heard if this information alters the explanation that the damage was done by the southbound tugboat.

It was just a matter of time when this would happen. The next time it could be a lot worse and the whole lighthouse may vanish. All it will take is one of those monstrous cargo ships to be out of control, maybe being tossed around in a storm. Accidents happen, and the lighthouse wouldn't stand a chance. Just ask the people of Baltimore.
