Starting the Year

At the organizational meeting of the Common Council last night, Council president Tom DePietro announced that the Legal Committee and the Truck Route Committee would continue in the new year, as would the Events Committee, "no longer including Tourism." He also announced the formation of a Parking Committee, tasked with acting on the information and recommendations of the recently completed parking study

In a letter to the Common Council, Zachary Bayman, CEO of The Maker Hotel and Gymnasium, where a window was shattered by gunshots in the wee hours of December 10, had asked specifically that the Common Council Police Committee be reinstated. In response to this request, DePietro announced that he wanted Councilmember Theo Anthony (Fourth Ward) to conduct a quarterly forum on public safety. In 2020, Anthony served on the Police Reconciliation and Advisory Commission, a title that morphed into the Police Accountability and Reconciliation Committee, the group that produced the PARC Report. Of his new appointment, Anthony quipped, "I've worked my whole life for this moment."

It was also announced that Dominic Merante (Fifth Ward) would continue as majority leader, and Ryan Wallace (Third Ward) would continue as minority leader.
