They Did It

Less than a week ago, Gossips reported that the solution being considered to prohibit people from parking beside the bump-outs at the corner of Second and Warren streets was to paint the costly and handsome granite curbing yellow: "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things." What was reported then as a possibility has happened. The granite curbing at those bump-outs--and at every other bump-out in the entire "Hudson Streetscapes" area--has been painted yellow.

The one bit of good news (if you look in the background of the photo above): a tree has been planted on Second Street beside Verdigris.

Sadly, the two trees planted in front of 201 Warren Street appear to be dying or already dead. The new one may stand a chance of survival, because it is very likely Kim Bach, the proprietor of Verdigris, will see to it the tree is properly watered.

  1. Ideally, in addition to the yellow curbs at the bump-outs, there should be white stripes on the pavement indicating NO PARKING ALLOWED ANY TIME, as the city does elsewhere, mostly at fire hydrants. But those lines would be in the lanes of traffic, so it won't and can't happen, yet another unforeseen problem with the bump- outs that we didn't ask for. When will the several permanent NO PARKING signs for the bump-outs arrive that the city will have to pay for?
Whose idea was it to include the bump-outs in the plans? And who at City Hall signed off on them, if anyone? It was a huge mistake for several reasons beyond illegal, dangerous parking, and now we have live with and pay for them forever.

  2. Hope so, it's sad to see dead trees. Most all the little trees the City planted a couple of years ago in special 'water-collecting' holes are now dead.
