A Shrouded Message?

There are still affidavit ballots to be counted, and the results of Tuesday's election are yet to be confirmed, but this morning, Mayor Kamal Johnson changed his profile picture on Facebook.

Is the message accompanying the photo--"Fall 9 times but I get up 10"--a veiled concession or a hint about what may be next for the mayor?

A tip from a reader and a little online research discovered that this picture appears to have been taken at the Harlem Children's Zone Power of Place convention which happened last month in San Diego. The name tag hanging from Johnson's neck is just like this one from the convention.

Johnson appears to be standing on the deck of the USS Midway, the aircraft carrier turned museum in San Diego, which, along with the ballroom at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, was one of the sites for the convention. The plane that appears behind him is one of the exhibits on the USS Midway. (Click here to see another image of the plane.)

Regarding the election, Gossips learned this afternoon that there were 45 envelopes containing affidavit ballots. After scrutiny by the Board of Elections, it was determined that 34 of them will most likely be opened and counted on Monday, November 10. At the present time, there are 55 votes separating Joe Ferris (947) and Johnson (892).

  1. What's the deal with the 11 affidavit ballots that won't be opened on Monday? - PJ

    1. I don't know what the problem is with these ballots, but people are given affidavit ballots when there is no evidence of their registration at the polls. Often it turns out that they don't actually live in Hudson but think they do because their postal address is Hudson. Also, I think challenged voters are asked to use an affidavit ballot. A voter can be challenged by someone who has evidence that the person no longer lives in Hudson.

  3. Henry, I’m confused about your comment. What does it mean or pertain to? Thanks.

  5. Our editors can only trust that Kamal treats this as a chance to build a serious private-sector career, rather than slinking back to The Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood or some other half-funded local sinecure, only to resurface as yet another ex-mayor coasting into a Board of Supervisors seat and practising the dark art of small-town career politics.
