The Hudson Police Department just made this announcement on their Facebook page. Harry Howard Avenue is closed between Paddock Place and Washington Street because a large crack has formed in the pavement in the area of Underhill Pond.
Biking on HH past Underhill on Saturday afternoon, I noticed that the pavement on the inbound lane and close to the center was not looking good -- there were several long cracks that I had never seen before and would have noticed had they been there previously. This will probably be hugely expensive to fix and it will take weeks, perhaps months, and likely not done by DPW. Underhill Pond's metal outlet pipe is about three feet in diameter, and it goes under HH, emptying on the other side of the street where a stream forms. I have no doubt that the old pipe has been leaking badly for years and just eroded much of what was supporting the road. This should come as no surprise to anyone, including Rob Perry. It's possible we are looking at major road replacement, maybe even needing to replace the outlet pipe, which may be 60 feet long or more. This is not going to be a patch job that takes one week. With all the rain coming this weekend, not much work will get done. This is the new norm -- warmer planet, more rain, more snow, more damage to our infrastructure, some of it ancient. Our streets are really taking a beating this winter, and all the plowing does not help. CLIMATE CHANGE IS EXPENSIVE!!!!!
Greenport starts at the end of Harry Howard, passed the High School. What it really does is prevent trucks and others from using Harry Howard as a raceway and/or short cut to the bridge!
