Meetings and Events in the Week Ahead

As we move further into August, and the worst of summer's heat and humidity seems behind us, here is what's happening.
  • On Monday, August 18, the Hudson Housing Authority (HHA) Board of Commissioners meets at 6:00 p.m. As always, the monthly meeting of the HHA Board holds out the hope we might get see some hint of what the proposed buildings will look like, but so far--aside from the "updated rendering" of the townhouses proposed for the former site of the community garden--we have seen nothing. Of course, there's always the chance. The meeting is a hybrid, taking place in person in the Community Room at Bliss Towers, 41 North Second Street, and on Zoom. • On Tuesday, August 19, the Common Council Finance Committee meets at 5:15 p.m. The meeting is a hybrid, taking place in person at City Hall and on Microsoft Teams. Click here for the link to join the meeting remotely.
  • At 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, the Common Council holds its regular monthly meeting. Word is that the Council will be voting again on the resolution to authorize the CDBG application. Among other items on the agenda for the meeting is a resolution allowing the oriel on the building proposed for 9 Partition Street to protrude 21 inches over the public way. The needed area variances, site plan approval, and a certificate of appropriateness have all been granted, so this is the final hurdle for this controversial new construction. The meeting is a hybrid, taking place in person at City Hall and on Microsoft Teams. Click here for the link to join the meeting remotely.
  • On Wednesday, August 20, at 9:30 a.m., the Hudson Industrial Development Agency (IDA) holds a special meeting to consider the request from Pennrose for a PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreement for the adaptive reuse of the 1964 John L. Edwards school building. The meeting is a hybrid, taking place in person at 1 City Centre, Suite 301, and on Zoom. Click here to join the meeting remotely.
  • Wednesday, August 20, is the final Wednesday for Waterfront Wednesdays. As always, the event begins at 4:00 p.m. and continues until sunset. The featured performance, which begins at 7:00 p.m., is by Wyld Blu, "a unique edge and galvanized passion that call out to your attention."
  • Also on Wednesday, August 20, the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) meets at 6:00 p.m. The agenda for the meeting includes public hearings for the following three applications: a height variance for an elevator enclosure on the roof of 10-12 Warren Street, which is being converted into a 27-room hotel; area variances needed to replace an existing garage behind 117 Warren Street with a new garage with a studio above; two lot size variances to allow the subdivision of 70-72 North Fifth Street into two fee simple lots. The ZBA meeting takes place in person only at City Hall.
  • On Friday, August 22, the Historic Preservation Commission holds its second meeting of the month at 10:00 a.m. The meeting is a hybrid, taking place in person at City Hall and on Microsoft Teams. Click here for the link to join the meeting remotely.

  1. Hudson needs more trees and grass. The last thing it needs is more blacktop, concrete and cars. The HHA plan will be a disaster for everyone living on State Street, who should not be the default dumping ground for traffic, garbage trucks and cars. If this plan is pushed through, the First Street extension should be reinstated and State Street terminated (dead end) at 2nd Street. All those cars and service vehicles need to exit out onto Columbia, Warren or Union Street. Better yet, eliminate the parking entirely, prohibit car ownership as a requirement of tenancy and provide regular public transportation with electric busses to parking areas outside of Hudson, down behind the Basilica, or someplace else. It's time City planners started to plan for the benefit of Human Beings over preferences constantly given to accommodate more blacktop and cars.
