How's That Working Out?

The new granite curbing at the bump-outs was painted yellow to signal drivers not to park there.

But it doesn't seem to be having the desired effect. Both these pictures were taken by a reader yesterday.

Fortunately, the illegally parked cars in both pictures are parked far enough from the corner so as not to force a driver making a right turn from South Second Street onto Warren to drive blindly into what could well be oncoming traffic. But it's obvious the yellow paint does not carry the force that some expected it to.

  1. The yellow paint will never carry the force needed to counteract the gravitational pull of lotto scratches, Pall Malls, and a chicken cutlet on a hard roll.

  2. If the Hudson Police were empowered and supported, they would park a squad car or post foot patrols on the corner for a few weeks. Write a few fines to the regular offenders. The behaviour stops.

After that, patrols return at random.

Criminologists call this “hot spot policing”. In behavioural theory it is a variable‑interval, intermittent reinforcement schedule applied to deter law breakers. It works because no one knows when the next patrol will appear.

Surely Mayor Kamal can raise this issue at the next monthly recurring meeting with all Department Heads and with HPD?

By letting the problem fester, residents are now pitted against one another. A minor crash or petty drama is the predictable next step.

  3. Such a waste to spend all that money on installing curved granite curbs and then painting them yellow. I can't imagine what curved granite curb slabs cost, it must have been astronomical. They could have made them out of concrete.

    1. Not to say they should have been made of concrete, but might as well have been if covered with florescent yellow paint. The granite was very expensive, beautiful and gave the whole project a refined look. The paint really trashed it. I don't know who approved it, or what the motivation was to so hurriedly paint it, but if it was up to me I'd send them out there with some paint remover and make them clean it all off.
