Ear to the Ground

This past spring, the whole animal butcher shop called The Meat Hook opened at 322 Warren Street. Now more meat is coming to Warren Street, albeit in cooked form. Word is that a steak restaurant is soon to open just up the street from The Meat Hook, at 342 Warren Street, the former location of American Glory.

The barbecue restaurant American Glory, which opened in 2010, closed toward the end of 2022. An article that appeared in the Register-Star revealed the circumstances surrounding the closing. Tax records show the building, which was originally the firehouse for H. M. Rogers Hose Company No. 2, was sold in February 2023 for $1.4 million. The new restaurant is expected to open in the building this fall.

  1. Any new business there should have to apply for a special use variance for the fenced space in front that is taking up way too much Warren sidewalk and never should have been allowed when Glory requested it years ago. The fence should have been removed when Glory closed because it was granted TO THEM by the city, not future businesses too. If this restaurant wants to utilize half the sidewalk, they should have to go through the same process that Glory did to get permission. But Craig Haigh did nothing (even allowing the goddamn Glory awning to remain for a year, a code violation!) and since the fence is still there, it will remain, this restaurant is given a gift and the rest of us have to be careful to avoid the metal fence in the middle of the sidewalk and be sure to let others pass before proceeding.
Of course, this new restaurant may never have thought about requesting more outdoor dining space that would take up half the sidewalk (unlike Glory, perhaps they are sympathetic to pedestrians). Lucky for them, unlucky for us. Now the fence will never disappear as it is implicitly grandfathered in the concrete.. On the bright side, at least every business in Hudson isn't granted permission by the city to occupy half the sidewalk for twenty feet. Thankfully, most business owners understand that to do so is uncalled for and disrespectful. Thanks Code Enforcement and City Hall ,and good luck with that ADA sidewalk improvement program you're undertaking. You're gonna need it!
