What Are Their Chances?

If you search "best time to plant trees in New York," you get this information:
The best time to plant trees in New York is late winter/early spring before buds open or late fall after the tree goes dormant but before the ground freezes. This allows the tree to establish its roots before the heat of summer or the harshness of winter.
There are undoubtedly good reasons, but one has to wonder why the trees that are part of the "Hudson Streetscapes" project had to be planted in July, during what we can only hope is the hottest part of the summer. At least one of the trees already appears to have died.

  1. Newly planted trees need water, lots and lots of water. These trees are not getting it. Very poor planning on the part of Hudson Streetscapes.

  2. Rob Perry and Justin Weaver, the mayor's aide, are the only two city officials I have heard giving updates on the DRI project, but it has primarily been Perry for the past several months during his reports. But
    1) We know that DPW has an awful track record with properly maintaining trees and shrubs, etc.
    2) Luizzi is not a landscaping company.
And 3) I'm pretty sure that neither Justin nor Kamal is a tree or plant hugger.
Lots of blame to go around for this fiasco that is only going to get uglier, but I'm going to stick with Rob Perry as the primary culprit. He calls the project Streetscapes, and we all know that DPW is all about our streets.
Ultimately, though, this lack of attention all comes directly from the top, from a useless mayor doing nothing but taking home over $75,000 a year. A decent and competent city manager would have seen this coming, just like Rob Perry could and should have seen it coming.

  4. July may well be the worst month, statistically speaking, to plant or transplant a tree. Great minds at work here in Hudson, for sure...
