On the Waterfront

Gossips has received word that yesterday--Friday, October 10--there was an accident involving a gravel barge at the Colarusso dock. The pictures below were taken from the Hudson-Athens ferry.

It seems the routine loading of gravel from the dock onto a barge on Friday afternoon went awry, and the barge tipped over, spilling its gravel into the river and partially sinking the huge barge.

This was the scene at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, as multiple rescue teams attempted to refloat the barge.

  1. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have an industrial loading operation and truck route immediately next to a waterfront park? WTF?? ~ PJ

    1. The dock has been there a lot longer than the park In fact it was there before Hudson when it was referred to as Clerack Landing

  2. Sounds like a great time to increase operations with no studies on risks to our environment, infrastructure, roads or potential harm to our health and the welfare of our city and surrounding nature and its wildlife. In just a few months time the Historic Hudson Lighthouse was hit by a barge, and now this. Colarusso rushed to put in their haul road solely to increase operations. Their whiny lawyer recently blamed The City of Hudson for Colarusso’s potential to go out of business and threatened lawsuits once again, all with the purpose to intimidate our city government into not making clear and concise requirements to protect our city and its residents. Hundreds of petition signatures and letters over more than five years are against their increasing operations, which go against city codes. Their dock operations have been a fraction of their business. They are not employers to Hudson residents. They pay a fraction in taxes. But their footprint is very large, and looms over our City. If they get their way, they will take over our waterfront and South Bay Marsh, leading to a vast increase in fine particulate matter air pollution from dust and diesel. What could the possible other risks be…?

  3. Meanwhile, our Mayor is taking $1,000 donations from Colarusso at political events staged outside of Hudson. - PJ

  4. Wow, we should be grateful that Colorusso has provided the residents of Hudson with a brand new beach. I can’t wait to go down there and lay down a beach towel and work on my tan. Only thing missing from that pile of gravel is a “Kamal for Mayor” sign sitting on top of it. As one of his biggest campaign contributors, Kamal should be proud to claim it as one of those “new parks that I built.”

Also, has anyone notified the NYS DEC?

  5. I'm expecting that it won't be long before we wake up to the news that a Colarusso truck has gone off the haul road and tipped over into South Bay, spilling diesel fuel into a wetland that has been designated by NY State as a Significant Coastal Wildlife. Habitat. ~ PJ

  6. First and foremost - we hope that no worker got hurt.

Our lives depend on the men and women who move earth, fuel generators, and transports materials.

Second - where is the mayor?

A competent mayor would be upfront and out front communicating what happened, what is being done to solve it, and (if part of the municipal responsibility or regulation) building systems and capacity to avoid repeat mistakes.
