News on the Political Front

This week, we will find out who has submitted designating petitions to run on a major party line. Petitions must be submitted by Thursday, April 3. In the meantime, the Working Families Party has published its endorsements. Here is the list of candidates in Columbia County the Working Families Party is endorsing.

The final office on the list is misidentified. It should be "Hudson Supervisor Ward 3." Michael Chameides, who has served as Third Ward supervisor since 2018, has announced he will not be seeking reelection.

  1. I can’t decide if a better name for most of these endorsements is the “Hardly Workin’ Party” or the “Working for Rich Developers Party.”

On a more serious note (if Carole or anyone else knows the answer), if any of the candidates on the WFP endorsement list run in the Democratic primary and lose, are they still on the general election ballot under WFP? If so, I see a lot of rematches and 3rd party split/spoilers coming. Also, to the local Democratic committees: how would you feel if a card carrying member loses the primary and still runs against your voter nominated candidate through a third party that keeps trying to usurp seats from your establishment candidates?

Candidates will need to actually strategize and triangulate voters.

    1. To answer your first question, Union Jack, if a candidate were to lose as a Democrat in the primary, they would still be on the ballot on the WFP line.

    2. Thanks, Carole, as I suspected. Heads up to all the candidates. I suspect some candidates, especially ones that may have grown accustomed to a pay raise above their qualifications, and the perks and standard of living that come with it, will not concede for party unity.

My personal opinion is more in line with Peter Spear in that national party affiliation should have little to do with local elections. I’d rather they just all duke it out in November.
