Early in 2011, Harbalwant Singh promised to bring the glitter and fun of Route 9 south of Poughkeepsie to Route 66 in Greenport. Four years later, the possibility of fulfilling that promise, which centered around the adaptive reuse of the V&O Press building, has vanished. The Register-Star reports today that what little remained of the building has now been demolished, including the part of the wall that bore the V&O name: "V&O building, name plate bite the dust." There had been talk of installing the name plate from the building in Greenport Town Park, to commemorate what had been such an important business in the area in the years before, during, and after World War II, but it turns the name on the building was not etched in stone but rather in cement, which crumbled when the wall came down.
