What's Next for the Hudson Arcade?

For the pessimistic among us, this seemed only a matter of time. The Register-Star reports today that the plan for a Hawthorne Valley Farm Store in the building at Warren and Fifth streets, which has been under construction for close to two years, has been abandoned: "Hawthorne Valley/Galvan store plan falls through."

  1. HVF should consider opening a branch in the now closed - yet fully equipped Claverack Market.

  2. The HUD Supportive Housing application requires the listing of readily accessible "Community Amenities" which specifically includes a grocery store. Points are added to the application based on available amenities. Private non-profits like Galvan are eligible to apply for HUD supportive housing grants.

That is the game being played here. Recall Galvan wanted to build a supportive housing facility at the corner of Warren and 5th several years back.

Lack of a grocery store that is readily accessible equals less points on the grant application for supportive housing.

Supportive housing in lay terms means an SRO for the homeless.

Galvan as the Lantern Group is in this business throughout NYC.

  5. Hawthorne Valley Farm Store ...I never believed it would happen in spite of the WGXC home spun interviews with HVFS management. Enter ... awaited new food shop on 8th & Warren / Ackerman old site.

This new EG building will ultimately find a use.
