Drivers Licenses for Immigrants

In what was described by immigrant advocate Emma Kreyche of the Worker Justice Center as an effort "to build a groundswell at the local level" to spur state government to action, a resolution was introduced by Alderman Tiffany Garriga (Second Ward) in support of issuing drivers licenses to New York residents regardless of immigration status. Several people spoke in support of the action, among them Michael Chameides, chair of the Hudson City Democratic Committee, and Juan Sanchez, a leader in the Latino community in Columbia County, whose comments were translated.

John Mason reports on the meeting in today's Register-Star: "Council mulls support for drivers' licenses for undocumented." Dan Udell's video of the meeting can be viewed on YouTube.
