During the weeks after the United States declared war on Germany and entered the Great War in Europe, the local newspaper was peppered with articles giving advice about home gardening, advocating a "waste not, want not" approach to cooking, reporting about the vegetable garden being planted at the White House, and announcing opportunities for kids to grow potatoes to supplement their families' food supply. The following editorial, which appeared in the Hudson Evening Register on May 9, 1917, explains the situation that then existed and made these measures critically important.
