Today, Mikey Williams posted this historic picture on the Facebook page "Hudson NY Historical Society." It shows 617-619 Warren Street as it was originally intended to be, back when it was a F. W. Woolworth's.
Compare its original symmetrical design, with two entrances, to the building we have today.
Fortunately, the Art Deco wall above the ground floor survived the alterations made to the storefront.
The good old days of my youth. Growing up in Hudson in the late 50's, 60's and 70's when we had Woolworth's, Newberry's and Kresge's (later Jupiter) all on the SAME block.
Excellent information - considering that this store is a vast chain store/franchise ultimately owned or branded by a large for-profit corporation with some of the largest asset managers and hedge funds as investors, I think HQ should help this store refurbish this highly visible building to meet historical standards of Hudson. They can certainly afford to help out. It would help CVS' business in Hudson.
When the scaffolding and dumpster were on the sidewalk and work was going on above the store for months a year or two ago, I asked the manager why things were taking so long. He was not at all happy about how things were being handled by the crew, the landlord and CVS management, and told me that the store had lost business because people thought the store was closed. He was really concerned for his store and his job. He told me that CVS does not own the building, and that (as I recall) the owner of the building lives in Florida. He also said that he had hoped the construction crew would have done more to fix the facade, but since it wasn't part of the main issue (roof?), the landlord didn't bother doing anything extra, you know to make the old building look decent. It's disgraceful; there should be a law preventing this kind of nonsense.
Thank you for bringing this up and the photos, my goodness! It's an eyesore, plain and simple. Considering the transformation of Warren, does Hudson Preservation have any say to restore the storefront?
Corporate franchise. Yuk.
