Lance Wheeler has published on YouTube his video of last night's candlelight memorial for Hudson Police Officer William Wrigley, who died in a car crash early Friday morning.
Bill Wrigley was the only officer who would always greet me using my first name. (I called him Officer Bill.)
When he first started on the force, he was called out to my neighborhood one day. There was a lot of waiting around time, and we quickly fell into talking: where we grew up, our heritage, our childhood memories, that sort of thing. He never forgot that, nor did I.
In my experience, despite any other troubles he may have had, he was the very image of that cop that Chief Moore wants for the world. A people person, he was always involved with this community whether on or off duty. His first instinct was to reach out, and he was at heart a gentle man.
I know I said this already, but he'd greet me - just some guy in the community - with my first name!
We can scarcely afford to lose a man like that. I'm very saddened by this news.
