When the ball dropped in Times Square last night marking the beginning of 2018, it was noted in various reports of the event that it was the coldest New Year's Eve since 1917. Last night at midnight, it was reportedly 9 degrees in New York City; in 1917, it was 1 degree.
On New Year's Day 1918, the Columbia Republican featured this story on its front page, under the banner headline "A HAPPY NEW YEAR."
A century later, our frigid temperatures have prevailed for more than 72 hours and are predicted to continue for at least another 48 hours. Stay warm. And a New Year Year from Gossips!
