A reader reported a tragic incident that occurred about an hour ago at the corner of Warren and Front streets, by Kasuri. A silvery white SUV, making a right turn from Front Street onto Warren Street, ran over a black Chihuahua. The vehicle did not stop but instead just sped up Warren Street. Although accompanied by its human, the little dog was not on a leash. The reader who witnessed the tragedy did not get the license plate number of the vehicle that committed the hit and run.
The little dog's human has my deepest sympathy, the driver of the SUV my purest contempt. Please, fellow dog owners, for their safety, keep your dogs tethered to you by a leash except when they are in a safe place like the dog park.
Let's get a three way stop sign there! The visibility isn't great in any case.
ReplyDeleteYesterday this human, while on bicycle and obeying traffic laws, was nearly hit TWICE by cars driving recklessly. Second driver was headed south in the north bound lane of S. 3rd.
ReplyDeleteNot to take anything away from the poor dog and owner, but the driving in Hudson is getting out of hand, and HPD and DPW seem to be doing little to nothing about it. And yes, there is no reason that Front and Warren should not be a 3 way stop. It took years of pestering HPD and DPW to get a stop sign at the top of the hill of 6th street from Oakdale. They don't seem to care or pay attention.
I am the owner of Pancho who was the little guy that was hit and killed yesterday. Thank you for your sympathy, though it’s a little bit harsh to read this waking up my first morning without my constant companion of 15 years.
ReplyDeleteHe was not black but a red haired little guy. And had just hopped out of the car in the parking lot after coming from the vet for his annual checkup and vaccinations.
It is one of my saddest days. He died in my arms, bleeding profusely and wagging his tail.
Also to clarify. The driver did stop. Sat there while I picked him up. But ultimately panicked and drove away/ I wish they hadn’t. But somehow quite honestly at that moment I just wanted to hold him and was in shock and having to interact with someone who just crushed my favorite little creature would have been too I don’t know how fast they were going. I believe he saw another dog and his impulses got the better of him and he uncharacteristically ran into the street. But yes walk your dogs on leashes, even if they don’t usually run into the street. The corner is a menace. Hopefully the proposed adjustments to the corner will mitigate some of the problems. Cheers,
Jonathan-KASURI
RIP Pancho
I am so sorry for your loss. I have, on occasion, let my dog walk out to the car without a leash, when the car is in front of my house. I will not do that again.
DeleteAgain, sorry Jonathan for your loss.
Margaret
I am so, so sorry for your loss.
DeleteI just have to say that I couldn’t stop thinking about this all day, I just can’t imagine how terrible it must have been. The best friend I ever had in my life was a tiny Italian Greyhound named Lucy who was my constant companion for 17 years. I was forever afraid that she might run out into traffic because she had no sense whatsoever about these things. It’s a terrible tragedy that could happen to anyone. Those of us who love animals know that we value them every bit as much as any human being. Luckily Pancho had a good long life.
DeleteThank you both.
