Yesterday, the Board of Estimate and Apportionment (BEA)--the mayor, the Council president, and the city treasurer--met to review the budgets proposed for the Police Department and the Youth Department. In their first pass through the police budget, the BEA agreed to reduce the contingency for retiring officers by half (there are six officers eligible for retirement, but only three are likely to retire) and eliminate one of the two new patrol vehicles requested.
Reviewing the Youth Department, which youth director Liz Yorck explained she had spent time cutting before presenting it, the BEA heard Yorck's request for a nutrition coordinator to be added to the staff, to oversee snacks offered at the Youth Center and handle the concession stand at Oakdale, and her plans to create sources of revenue at Oakdale: for example, kayak rentals and user fees for nonresidents. She also reported that the department would be able to cut back on the budget for programming because they were getting so much support from Friends of Hudson Youth.
I like what I’m hearing from Ms. Yorck. Somebody that’s taking initiative on being budget minded and also looking at ways to generate revenue. Can she also chair the Tourism Board? (I kid)
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the chair doesn't have the power to remove all the problematic grifters sitting on the Tourism Board.
