There has been a Chinese restaurant at 305 Warren Street since 1993. It wasn't always called Red Chopstick, but it was there. This morning, a reader sent me this photograph. Saturday will be Red Chopstick's last day.
Not surprising, can't tell you how many times I went there and said I would never go back, because the food was barely edible, last time I threw it out.
Food Sing at 709 Warren has been at the same location operating under the same name since around 1981. They have continuously been in operation under the same name the longest within the city limits.
Shame on people who think it’s funny to take cheap shots as a local business goes under. The people there worked so hard and did such a great job. I’ve had countless meals from Red Chopstick and I will miss them dearly. No, it is not haute cuisine but it is affordable. We all know that the real story here is that it will be replaced with yet another expensive tourist restaurant that will be of little or no use to us working class full time residents. RIP Red Chopstick, you will be missed.
personally I am a fan of Spring Garden on Fairview, mainly because pre-pandemic it was eat in. I like to have a pot of tea while I am waiting for my meal. But my son and I have had many take-outs from the Red Chopsticks. Sad to see it go.
Speaking of which, can you resurrect Park Falafel and Pizza? It can be a take out stand which would be perfect in pandemic times which will last forever I estimate.
Actually, if memory serves it wasn’t continuously a Chinese restaurant since 1993. Imre Vilaghy had a pizza place named Sopranos there for a brief period. HBO actually sent him a cease and desist letter about the name.
Food Sing is the “OG” of American Chinese in Hudson. It’s been around since I was a kid in the early 90s so I think it’s the oldest eatery in town, although it’s switched hands several times over the last 2 decades
The 300 block won't be the same without the stench of their grease...
ReplyDeleteIt's the supply chain, all held up on the high seas.
ReplyDeleteDamn.

ReplyDeleteWhat's the oldest restaurant/eatery establishment in Hudson? Cascades? Tanzy? Swoon?
ReplyDeleteThe Cascades opened in the fall of 1993; Red Dot opened on Bastille Day 1999. Those are the two eateries that have been operating the longest.
DeleteI might be wrong, but I think Food Sing has been there longer than those 2, although with changing ownership.

DeleteI believe Food Sing is the oldest eating establishment in Hudson.

ReplyDeleteMy recollection is that Imre's short-lived pizza place was on the north side of the street.
DeleteThe Pizza place was done by Jubilee, now Ca'Mea. Red Chopstick will be missed. They have good food at decent prices.

ReplyDeleteExactly. I know I was eating food there back in the 80's.
DeleteIt also appears that they have not repainted their sign since then.
DeleteSo?
DeleteAesthetics don't matter? Not to you, apparently. Would it be okay if the sign were falling apart, too? B Huston
