Arbor Day on Sunday

Tomorrow at 10 a.m., the Conservation Advisory Council observes Arbor Day by planting five trees in various locations around the city. Yesterday, however, the Department of Public Works did the hard work of digging the holes and setting the trees in place. What is left for the volunteers is filling in the holes, attaching the tree watering bags, and posing for pictures.

  2. The DPW team did an amazing job. The CAC is very appreciative.

One site, 248 Columbia Street, the DPW could not pre-dig. So anyone who wants a work out this morning you can get it for FREE! We will be working at that site at around 10:30.

The CAC is also very appreciative to the anonymous donor who gifted these trees to the city via the HDC

  3. On the 400 block of Columbia there are two sidewalk trees going in the ground, 2 older trees, and 4 of the goofy DEC trees with the special drainage installed about 5 or 6 years ago. Of the 2 older trees, only one is thriving, the other looks sickly and doesn't have much longer to live Even a city dweller can see it don't have a chance. All 4 of the horrible idea special drainage trees are done for, they never had a chance. Been looking sick for years. The sidewalk was permanently changed in a bad way for those 4 trees and the other 6 or so on Union. And they should have been removed years ago. It's insulting really.
Every 5 years or so it seems there is a push for sidewalk trees, but no one, not even DPW, takes care of them or removes them when they are sickly and probably spreading disease to other trees, not to mention just plain ugly. Why should we think that the 2 new trees on Union and elsewhere will fare any better? Check up on them in a few years and I guarantee that most of them, if not all if them, will be dead or dying.
Without a DPW that cares about trees and without a professional arborist on staff or hired per diem, this sidewalk tree planting business seems to be yet another exercise in futility.

  4. When the CAC seeks to place street trees the only thing we ask of the homeowner in advance is they will steward the tree, meaning watering, weeding and appropriate pruning.

We placed 5 trees last year and all are thriving. In fact last years planting stimulated an additional 5 trees to be planted the following weekend.

We planted 5 trees this year, the tree pits are generous, the soil is new, they are well mulched and the home owners are committed to watering the trees. Thus, there is a very good chance that all of the trees planted today will thrive.

Next year we hope to plant 5 times as many.
