Remembering Hudson's Recent Past

At last report, the City was still waiting for Amtrak and National Grid to cooperate on the utility easements required to begin work on rebuilding the Ferry Street Bridge.

Today, John Cody sent Gossips this picture taken in 1985, which shows a functioning Ferry Street Bridge. What is accessed by crossing the bridge is somewhat different from what is there today: the state boat launch at the right and an oil tank farm at the left.

Here's the view of that tank farm from the river, also taken in 1985.

The oil tanks occupied what is now Henry Hudson Riverfront Park, as well as the now vacant lots north of the Dunn warehouse. They weren't removed until the mid-1990s.

Thanks to John Cody for providing these historic images.

  1. Thanks to John Cody and the other stalwart citizens who dealt with waterfront issues back in the day!

  2. I was here when the oil tanks were there. They were owned by a Russian company that went bankrupt according to my accountant whose firm represented them. It was Bill Allen's administration that began the process to get rid to them, getting grant money from the State.

    1. Jennifer, There is a history prior to the russians in which the City proposed a 20 or so acre active oil refinery for the site in 1982. The russians took the site over after SHOW, a group of local citizens, defeated the refinery proposal The russians were cited by the feds for tax evasion and put out of business here. They moved to LA, Cal. and were put out of business there as well. For the same reason.
