Layers of History

The Jan Van Hoesen House on Route 66, beside the entrance to the Dutch Village Mobile Home Park, is one of the most significant historic sites in Columbia County.

The house was built sometime between 1715 and 1724 for Jan Van Hoesen and his wife, Tanneke Witbeck. Jan was the grandson of Jan Frans Van Hoesen, who in 1622 purchased a substantial tract of land along the river and upland from the Mohicans. The land on which the City of Hudson is located was purchased from Van Hoesen heirs by the Proprietors, the founders of Hudson, in 1783.

In recent years, it has been discovered that the house was, in the 19th century, the home of Quaker abolitionist Charles Marriott, and it was a station on the Underground Railroad.

The house and its history, particularly as it relates to enslaved people, is the topic of a new video called "It This House Could Talk." That video can be viewed here.
