On the Preservation and Appreciation of Trees

On NPR this morning, there was a story about urban forestry in Melbourne, Australia, where the City of Melbourne has developed a twenty-year strategy to preserve and develop an urban forest that will be "resilient, healthy, and diverse and will contribute to the health and well-being of the community and to the creation of a liveable city." Part of that strategy was identifying all the trees in public spaces by species and age and, to encourage community involvement, assigning each one an email address so that people could report any observed problems with specific trees. The story of what happened can now to heard online: "To: MelbourneElm22; Subject: My Dog Peed On You Today."
