HCSD Election Less Than a Week Away

On Tuesday, May 17, voters in the Hudson City School District will go to their polling places--Hudson residents to John L. Edwards Primary School, 360 State Street; Greenport, Stockport, and Ghent residents to Greenport Pumper Company No. 1, 216 Green Street; and Claverack, Livingston, and Taghkanic residents to A. B. Shaw Firehouse, 67 NY-23 in Claverack--to approve the proposed 2016-2017 budget and to elect members of the Board of Education.

There has been a fair amount of information available about the budget. Last week, a flier on the subject, with particulars about opportunities for students and student achievement, arrived in the mail. On Monday, HCSD superintendent Maria Suttmeier devoted her regular column in the Register-Star to explaining the budget: "Helping voters understand the district budget."

Considerably less attention has been given to the candidates for the school board. There are three available seats on the board this election, and only two candidates--a situation that pretty much ensures both will be elected--but many voters may not know who those two candidates are. They are Sumayyah Shabazz, who currently serves on the school board after being appointed in August 2015 to fill the vacancy created when Peter Rice resigned, and Linda Hopkins. Information about the two candidates can be found on the HCSD website. Voters will have the opportunity to write in a third candidate of their choice. If you're interested in serving on the school board, there is still be time to mount a write-in campaign. You just need to get more votes than anyone else whose name is being written in.

  1. Sorry to see no comments on this. I won a seat on the Board in 2007 as a write-in candidate and would be glad to offer advice if you email me at pbmeyer@verizon.net

  2. If you were still on the BOE Peter the Common Core test results from last year would not have been swept under the rug. Germantown presented their results which the Register Star covered. Ms. Suttmeier made no such effort. Perhaps because they were the worst in the state.

    They are as follows:

    90% failed 3rd grade English
    92% failed 3rd grade Math
    75% failed 4th grade English
    75% failed 4th grade Math
    88% failed 5th grade English
    84% failed 5th grade Math
    73% failed 6th grade English
    81% failed 6th grade Math
    88% failed 7th grade English
    90% failed 7th grade Math
    69% failed 8th grade English
    100% (THAT'S RIGHT) failed 8th grade math

This is from the State Education Department. The disturbing aspect of this lack of action also questions what other details are deliberately kept from the public?
