At a special meeting of the Common Council tonight, Mayor Kamal Johnson presented the proposed budget for 2024. Most notable was a tax increase of 03.875 percent, which Johnson characterized as small, below the state tax cap, and the first tax increase since 2020.
In his comments about the budget, Johnson spoke of the City being committed to paying its workers wages and salaries that were competitive. He also made reference to anticipated increased or new revenue streams: a new parking system and a 4 percent local tax on cannabis sales.
The proposed 2024 budget can be found here. It is expected that the Common Council will be discussing the budget at its informal meeting on Monday, November 13. A public hearing on the budget will take place on Thursday, November 16, at 5:30 p.m. The public hearing will be a hybrid, taking place in person at the Central Fire Station, 77 North Seventh Street, and on Zoom.
