A Judgment in Gavin Investigation

There's news on the outcome of the investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment brought against Hudson High School principal Tom Gavin by HCSD superintendent Maria Suttmeier. Lynn Sloneker, on her blog Unmuffled, reports that Questar III BOCES investigators have ruled the allegations unfounded.

  1. Suppose for a moment that the charges were (are?) unfounded. That's why he was suspended WITH pay. That's part of protecting labor rights, believe it or not. You cannot just arbitrarily make allegations and suspend people without pay. That's the kind of mindset the GOP and anti-union folks want you to have.

Please provide specific evidence for this allegation.

  4. I'll retract my last post and start over--pointing straight at the GOP was unfair:

Unions provide protections to their employees so they can't be arbitrarily terminated for things like insubordination (see 'A statement from the publisher and executive editor,' Register-Star 16 Nov 2012.)"

  5. I believe that what reasonable people resent about unions is their overreaching, and the overall expense of that overreaching, and not their existence.

Your reposing of the situation does credit to the argument for unions; certainly they have a place and a function.

But I doubt that by exercising greater control over their member's choices and by relentlessly demonizing perceived enemies unions will thrive in the long run (in the US anyway).

  6. The "reasonable people" are far and few between, especially in this case:

The unions' perceived "overreaching, and the overall expense of that overreaching" is because of egregious instances like this.
