It Isn't Over Until It's Over

HudsonValley360 has reported results in the races for mayor and Common Council president, and the Times Union has added to that the results in the races for Fourth Ward alderman and Second Ward supervisor. Shortly before noon today, the Columbia County Board of Elections posted unofficial results in the races for Hudson mayor, Common Council president, and treasurer, making it clear that the numbers "do not include early voting results." Hudsonians cast 360 ballots during the nine days of early voting--58 of those were in the Second Ward and 85 in the Fourth Ward. Also not included are 137 absentee ballots from Hudson voters that have been received. Of the absentee ballots, 39 are in the Second Ward, and 53 are in the Fourth Ward.

  1. Aaaand... It feels like it may never be over.

Almost 48 hours after polls closed, the Columbia County Board of Elections still has not published a comprehensive report of results. They had vowed to do so by the close of business today, but I am now hearing they will not meet their own (already-belated) deadline.

The delay appears to involve first the reporting of “incorrect“ results Tuesday night (that’s their word, “incorrect”) ... plus the lack of a procedure and plan to deal with about 700 ballots from the first Saturday of early voting, which could not be scanned because someone at the Board printed them on the wrong paper.

Bizarrely, they embargoed—then released—then retracted—partial results from the early voting on the machines which was in hand shortly after the polls closed on Tuesday. Normally, election results are released in a rolling fashion as they come in. But the BOE seems to view the early votes as some radioactive, terrifying, alien phenomenon.
