Just in Time for Christmas

William Shannon, journalist and author of the blog Hudson River Zeitgeist, has written a novel about the stand of shacks at North Bay, variously known as the Furgary Boat Club, Shantytown, the Shacks, and now dubbed by the DRI "the historic fishing village." The book, called The River's Never Full, will be released at The Spotty Dog, 440 Warren Street,  on December 8, the day after Winter Walk. To whet your appetite for acquiring your own copy, Roger Hannigan Gilson reviews the book on The Other Hudson Valley: "Hudson's Shantytown Explored in New Novel Highlighting Clashes & Change."

  1. Looking forward to reading Billy's interpretation of rivertown.

  2. The article seems to insinuate that people lived in the shacks full time - my understanding is that they were just fishing lodges with convenient access to the river and not primary residences.

    1. You're right, Chip, but according to legend there was at least one person who used his shack as a primary residence.

    2. Going back to the '60s, at least seven individuals lived in their shacks year-round. Before then, who knows?
