At the informal Common Council meeting last night, DPW superintendent Rob Perry reported that credit and ATM cards are currently not working in the vending machine that dispenses trash bags in front of City Hall. The reason for this, Perry explained, is that the cellular connection for the card reader is 3G, and, as of January 1, 2023, cellular providers had discontinued this frequency in favor of 5G. The City was notified of this change, but the notification came, by email, during the time that City Hall had no access to email as a consequence of the ransomware attack on Rackspace.
Perry said that a new card reader and processor have been ordered, but until they arrive and are installed, the vending machine only accepts cash--dollar bills.
